 Men with Knives – September 15, 2014

Chimichurri, chimichurri, chimichurri! I like the word and I love the sauce. In fact, I’ll be buying the ingredients and trying my hand at it today. And if my attempt to replicate this delicious Argentinian sauce fails, I’ll just give Gareth a call at Men with Knives! After all, he’s the chef who introduced me to Chimichurri sauce at last night’s Let’s Eat! event.

Men with Knives has a less than conspicuous location, called The Larder, on Ronell Crescent in Collingwood. Unlike all our previous Let’s Eat! venues, The Larder is not a restaurant; it’s headquarters for Men with Knives. Most people are already aware that Men with Knives is a full service catering company, serving small events in your own home, all the way up to weddings of up to 250 people. Check them out at http://www.menwithknives.ca/catering-menus/. Owners Gareth and Julie Carter and their staff graciously invited Let’s Eat! to fill their tasting space and enjoy their food last night, marking the 27th Let’s Eat! event since we started in November 2011.

The evening started off just right with live music from the talented and fun Drew McIvor. Check out his new CD called Porchlight. http://drewmcivor.com. With Drew creating the atmosphere, Men with Knives made sure we all had something to eat right away, with a delicious charcuterie board set up upon our arrival. And to make a brilliant concept even better, our wonderful local breweries sponsored the event by supplying FREE BEER for all our guests! At this point, I’m already satisfied. But it gets better as crispy wings and battered smelt are passed around to guests, along with mini polenta cakes with an awesome mushroom topping. Then we sat down to our meal. I’ve lost count of the courses! We had trout, ribs, macaroni, quail eggs, grilled seasonal veggies, and my standout favourite of the night, tritip beef with Gareth’s signature Chimichurri sauce. I’m clearly fixated on this sauce, originating in Argentina, to be served with grilled meats. It goes along well the Men with Knives’ concept of serving locally sourced, internationally inspired foods. If you want to know more about this sauce, as I did after tasting it, here’s a link for the quick and dirty: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chimichurri.

Anyway, it was such a fun and tasty event. We owe so many thank yous! Thank you to all the guests who came out to support this local business and provide the event with good conversation and lots of laughs. Thank you to Gareth and Julie for helping us think outside the box to host an event in a catering space, and for the amazing culinary experience. Thank you to all the wonderful servers who took such good care of us – you made us feel very well-looked after. Thanks to Drew for the perfect musical choices. Finally, and certainly not least important, thank you to the local breweries for the opportunity to taste all your great beers! There was lots of sampling going on. On the menu were beers from: McLean’s, Northwinds, Collingwood, Creemore Springs.

THANK YOU!
